Help & documentation
Everything financ.ee does, in plain language. Open to everyone, no account needed.
What do I do first?
Create your account, confirm your email, set up two-factor authentication, then create your vault passphrase. The passphrase is separate from your password and is what encrypts your documents. After that, import a statement or two and your dashboard fills itself in.
Where is the guided tour?
Settings → Guided tour → Start the tour. It runs automatically the first time you sign in and you can replay it whenever you like.
What is the vault passphrase and what happens if I lose it?
Your passphrase is turned into an AES-GCM 256 key inside your browser using PBKDF2-SHA256 with 310,000 iterations. Documents are sealed with that key before they are uploaded, so nobody else — including us — can open the original files. The passphrase itself never leaves your device. There is deliberately no recovery: if you lose the passphrase, the stored files can never be opened again, though the figures already extracted from them stay in your account.
What exactly is encrypted, and what is not?
Encrypted with your passphrase: the original statement files in storage. Not encrypted with your passphrase: the extracted rows — dates, amounts, counterparties, categories, accounts, goals and context notes — because analytics, search and the advisor need to read them. Those rows are protected instead by per-row ownership rules in the database, encryption at rest on the EU infrastructure, and TLS in transit. Settings → Encryption coverage lists every category.
How are AI prompts handled?
Questions and document text are decrypted in your browser and sent to the AI provider once for that request. We do not store the prompt afterwards, we do not use it to train models, and we do not link it to your identity outside your account. Each AI feature has a rolling daily cap and a burst guard, and the credit meter shows the cost before you send.
Who can see my data?
You, and anyone you deliberately add to your household. Every table enforces row-level ownership: signed-out visitors have no access at all, and a signed-in user's queries can only ever return their own rows or rows shared with them through a household. Files in storage are locked to your own folder.
Why must the vault be unlocked to upload?
So a document is never stored unencrypted. If the vault is locked, uploads are blocked. If you import while locked in an older session, only the extracted figures are kept and the file itself is discarded in your browser — the document then shows as 'not stored'.
Which files can I import?
PDF statements (including scans), Excel workbooks and CSV exports. You can drop a whole folder at once; files are processed one at a time so nothing is lost if one fails.
A file failed. What do I do?
Each failed file shows a plain-English reason, the stage it failed at, and a Retry button. Open 'Details' for page count, characters read, whether it was treated as a scan, and the raw error. 'Export diagnostics' downloads all of that as a CSV.
Will the same statement be imported twice?
No. Files with the same name and size are flagged before upload, and the database keeps a single record per file per account, so a retry or re-import updates that record instead of creating a duplicate. Transactions are also de-duplicated by a fingerprint of date, amount and counterparty.
What does Reprocess do?
It decrypts the stored original, reads it again from scratch, and replaces the transactions that document produced. Use it after you have corrected an account or want a fresh pass with better scan handling.
My net worth looks wrong.
An account needs a real balance to anchor to. Statements set that automatically from their closing balance; otherwise open Accounts and enter the actual balance and its date. Mark loans and credit cards as liabilities so they subtract rather than add. Accounts without an anchor are shown as 'estimated'.
Can I edit or delete things?
Everything. Transactions, accounts, documents, goals and context notes can each be edited, deleted individually, or selected in bulk. Accounts also have a merge tool for duplicates created by inconsistent bank naming.
How are AI credits used?
Each import, advisor answer, natural-language query, categorisation run and voice transcription consumes credits from a rolling 24-hour allowance, with a per-feature cap and a short burst guard. The meter in the header shows what is left.
Does voice cost more?
Yes. Speaking a question costs credits to transcribe the recording, and then the advisor's answer costs credits on top. financ.ee asks you to confirm before it records, and the button is labelled accordingly. Typing the question avoids the transcription cost entirely.
Can I use my own AI key?
Yes — set your own provider key in Settings. Your prompts and document extractions then run through your own account instead of the shared allowance, so they are billed to you directly and are not limited by our daily caps.
How do I share with a partner?
Create a household in Settings and add the other person. Records you assign to that household become readable by its members; everything else stays private to you. Removing someone revokes their access immediately.
How do I export or delete everything?
Settings → data tools. Export gives you JSON and CSV of everything stored. Erasure permanently deletes your accounts, transactions, documents, goals and notes, and takes effect immediately. We are EU-based and both are GDPR self-service rights.
Is this financial advice?
No. financ.ee gives information and modelling based on what you give it. It is not regulated financial, tax or legal advice.
Every chart in financ.ee is deterministic arithmetic over your own records — no black box, and no model estimating a figure. Each calculation is documented below. The same note appears beneath every chart in the app, with live counts of the records used, and Settings includes a debug mode that exposes the raw series.
Net worth over time
Your total net worth at the end of each month you have data for.
Start from today's net worth (assets − debts), then walk backwards month by month, subtracting that month's net movement. So the line always ends on your real figure today rather than assuming every account started at zero.
Data included
- Every account's balance: a confirmed statement balance where you have one, otherwise opening balance + all its transactions
- All transactions that are not rejected, grouped by booking month
- Foreign amounts converted to your base currency at the stored rate
Data excluded
- Transactions you rejected
- Accounts you deleted
Limitations
- Accounts without a confirmed balance make the whole line shift up or down — set real balances on the Accounts page to fix it.
- Months with no transactions at all are not drawn.
Balance trail
The same month-end walk, but limited to the time window you picked.
Today's net worth, minus each month's net movement going backwards, restricted to transactions inside the selected window.
Data included
- Non-rejected transactions inside the window
- Current account balances
Data excluded
- Anything booked before the window starts
Limitations
- Shortening the window does not change today's figure, only how far back the line goes.
Cashflow by month
Money in versus money out for each calendar month.
For each month: income = sum of all positive amounts; spending = sum of the absolute value of all negative amounts; net = income − spending.
Data included
- Non-rejected transactions, bucketed by the date they were booked
- Amounts converted to your base currency
Data excluded
- Rejected transactions
Limitations
- Transfers between your own accounts show up as both income and spending unless you categorise them as transfers.
- Bars far above the rest are clipped to the axis and marked with a caret so one huge month cannot flatten the others.
Savings rate
The share of each month's income you kept.
(income − spending) ÷ income × 100, rounded to a whole percent.
Data included
- The monthly cashflow figures above
Data excluded
- Months with no income at all — dividing by zero is meaningless, so they are skipped
Limitations
- A month where a lump sum landed can read above 100%, and a month funded from savings reads negative.
- Extreme months are clipped to keep the trend readable; hover the amber dots for the true value.
Net worth, next 12 months
A straight-line extrapolation of where you are heading.
Average the net result of your last 6 months with data, then add that same amount for each of the next 12 months on top of today's net worth.
Data included
- Your current net worth
- The last six monthly net figures
Data excluded
- Known future events — vesting, tuition, an internship salary — unless they already appear as transactions
Limitations
- It is deliberately naive: no compounding, no inflation, no seasonality.
- Six unusual months in, twelve unusual months out.
Spending by category
Where your outgoing money went.
Sum the absolute value of every negative transaction, grouped by its category. Rows without a category are grouped as Uncategorised.
Data included
- Non-rejected outgoing transactions
- The category on each row, whether set by AI or by you
Data excluded
- Incoming money
- Rejected transactions
Limitations
- Only the top categories are drawn — the rest are folded out of the chart, not out of your totals.
Where it comes from
Your income split by source.
Sum every positive transaction, grouped by category, falling back to the counterparty name when there is no category. Top six shown.
Data included
- Non-rejected incoming transactions
Data excluded
- Outgoing money
Limitations
- Refunds and money moved in from your own accounts count as income unless you recategorise them.
Biggest counterparties
Who you paid the most.
Group outgoing transactions by a cleaned-up merchant name (card noise, reference numbers and legal suffixes stripped), sum them, and take the top eight.
Data included
- Non-rejected outgoing transactions
- The counterparty, or the description when there is none
Data excluded
- Incoming money
Limitations
- Two spellings of the same shop usually merge, but not always — edit the counterparty on a transaction to force it.
Fixed vs variable spending
How much of your spending is committed versus discretionary.
Anything matching a detected recurring outgoing payment counts as fixed; every other outgoing transaction counts as variable.
Data included
- Non-rejected outgoing transactions
- The recurring-payment detector, including your manual always/never overrides
Data excluded
- Income
Limitations
- Mark a payment as one-off or force it as recurring in Automations and this split updates.
Currency exposure
How much of your activity happens in each currency.
Sum the absolute value of every transaction in its original currency, grouped by that currency. Deliberately not converted — the point is to show the exposure.
Data included
- Non-rejected transactions and the currency they were booked in
Data excluded
- Currency conversion
Limitations
- Because it measures turnover, not holdings, a single large transfer can dominate.
Where the money sits
Your balance spread across accounts.
Each account's balance, converted to your base currency, top six by size. Debts are shown as their absolute size.
Data included
- Confirmed statement balances where set, otherwise opening balance + transactions
Data excluded
- Accounts with a zero balance
Limitations
- Accounts without a confirmed balance are estimates.
Emergency fund
How much of your target buffer you actually hold.
Spendable money ÷ (monthly essential spending × your chosen number of months). Essential spending is the average monthly total of outgoing transactions that are not marked one-off.
Data included
- Balances of open, non-debt accounts
- Outgoing transactions not flagged as one-off
Data excluded
- Loans, credit cards and closed accounts
- One-off payments like tuition
Limitations
- Flag genuine one-offs on the Transactions page or your target will be inflated.
Demo ledger
A fixed sample dataset, computed in your browser.
The same balance and category maths as the real app, run over invented transactions.
Data included
- Bundled sample data
Data excluded
- Your data
- Any AI call
